How to extract attachments from an EML file
The attached files are stored inside the email as MIME parts. This extractor decodes those parts into downloadable files, without requiring Outlook or access to the original inbox. It handles one saved email at a time.
- Open the .eml email and review its attachment names, types and sizes.
- Download a single file, or choose whether to include inline images in the ZIP.
- Select Download attachments ZIP to save the matching files together.
Attachments and inline images
A document sent with an email is usually a regular attachment. A logo, signature image or photo displayed within the message may be an inline resource. Both can be stored as MIME parts, so the attachment list can contain more files than the sender's visible attachment row suggests.
Inline resources are labeled in the list. Exclude them from the ZIP when you only want the regular attachments, or include them to save the pictures too. This selection changes the ZIP contents; it does not modify the source EML or convert attached documents into a different format.
How ZIP filenames are handled
Duplicate filenames must remain separate inside an archive. If two attachments are both called report.pdf, the ZIP uses names such as report.pdf and report (2).pdf. Filename matching also accounts for letter case, and unsafe filename characters are cleaned before an entry is created.
The attachment contents keep their decoded bytes. ZIP entries are stored without recompression, so the archive groups the files but may not make them smaller. A ZIP can include up to 1,000 files and 50 MB of decoded attachment data; if a limit is reached, download the files individually.
Try extracting the sample attachment
The fictional studio-visit email contains visit-details.txt, a short text file with the visit schedule. Open the sample above and choose its download button. You can also download the source EML below and reopen it to repeat the extraction.
Why an expected attachment is missing
A cloud-storage link in an email is not a file embedded in the EML. The extractor can only recover attachment data that is actually stored in the message. Some exports omit attachments, and encrypted or damaged content may not decode into usable files.
If the listed file is winmail.dat, download it and use the Winmail.dat opener to inspect that container. If no parts match the ZIP selection, try including inline images. This tool extracts files; it does not collect email addresses from the message or download content from external links.
EML attachment extraction questions
Can I extract attachments without Outlook?
Yes. Open a saved EML here without Outlook or an email account. For MSG or MBOX files, use MSG to PDF or MBOX to PDF, then open that tool's Attachments tab.
Are the attachments changed?
Their decoded contents are preserved. Unsafe filename characters are replaced, and duplicate ZIP entry names receive a suffix. The original EML is not changed.
Does the ZIP include images shown inside the email?
Inline images stored as attachments are included by default and labeled in the list. Uncheck Include inline images in ZIP to omit them. Remote images are not fetched.
What are the limits?
Open one EML file up to 25 MB. A ZIP can contain up to 1,000 selected entries and 50 MB of decoded data. If that limit is exceeded, download attachments individually.
Does extraction mean the files are safe?
No. This tool does not scan files for malware or verify the sender. Downloading or extracting a file does not establish that it is safe to open.
Does my data leave my device?
Your selected files and pasted text are processed in your browser, without being uploaded to EMLKit. Remove the input or leave the page to clear the current workspace. Ordinary page requests still reach the site host. Read about file handling.
